St. Wenceslaus School

December 2011

Dear Parents,

The advent season is such a special time of the year and for all of us here at the school it becomes even more special when we get to experience it everyday.  Getting gifts at Christmas time is so much fun for young children (I like it too!) but by sending them to a Catholic school you as parents have given them the best gift of all.  The children get to learn about advent everyday while they are at morning Mass and while they are in the classroom as well.  It is so important to learn at a young age that advent is about the birth of Jesus and what you can give and not what we might receive.

Of course when it is the Christmas season there is always the little children singing at the school concert.  I really enjoyed the Christmas concert last Sunday, December 3rd.  Kelli Mattson did a wonderful job putting together wonderful traditional Christmas songs and the children were such a joy to watch.  We had a tremendous crowd there to watch the concert.  I cannot say enough how thankful I am of the support this shows for Catholic education.

The first semester has come and gone!  Where does the time go?  With the Holiday season upon us I am definitely looking forward to a little rest and relaxation.  Being the principal at St. Wenceslaus and seeing the young children everyday sometimes gets me to reminisce about what I did as a child.  I am pretty sure I wrote about this 5-6 years ago so I hope you don’t mind that I share it with you again.  I know that everyone has certain traditions for Christmas and one of my family’s traditions is to have a big family meal on Christmas Eve and as a part of that meal we have oyster soup.  I am part of a big family (five sisters & twin brothers) and of course you can imagine we liked to give each other a hard time now and then.  When I was very little I never ate the soup because I was led to believe by my loving older sisters that those oysters were actually frogs.  As the years went by and I got older and wiser I started enjoying the soup instead of shoving it off to the side.  I shared this memory with you as a reminder to sit back and enjoy your family and relatives over the Holidays.  As I pointed out before, it is nice to get gifts but it is a better gift if everyone understands the true meaning of Christmas while getting to enjoy their family traditions and the company of loved ones.  I wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Mike Weiss (Principal)
