First Grade News

There’s SNOW Place Like First Grade!

Snow may not be piling up outside but we are decorating the inside of our school with snow scenes!!  We made snow shovels that we finger painted with detergent to make a winter picture.  They are hanging from the ceiling in our room along with jolly snowmen!  There are glittery snow plates in the hallway.  We enjoy snow!!

In religion we have been studying our families, our parishes and the apostles.  We wrote our name on fish and put them in a net to show that each of us is called to be “fishers of men” just like the apostles.

We will celebrate Hat Day in our classroom on Friday, January 20.  Each of us will wear hats to school.  During the day we will write a hat story, listen to books about hats and decorate a hat for our silhouette in the hallway.  We will make an ABC Flip Hat Book that allows us to give all kinds of funny hats to a monkey.

The mail carrier has been busy delivering postcards to the first grade.  After studying maps we asked friends and family to send us postcards.  Every time a postcard arrives, the students get out a map of the United States and locate the city and state on their map.  We proudly display the cards on our wall.  We HOPE to hear from every one of our 50 states!

We learned about prejudice on the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.  We had a special activity and we read books about King, Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges to help us to understand how our laws were unfair to the African Americans.

Thank you to our room mothers for our Christmas parties and to everyone who has contributed to our classrooms.
