Third Grade News

The third grade has been studying about the history of communities.  The Spanish, French and English explorers came to different parts of North America and established communities.  St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest city in the United States.  We also learned that improvements in transportation, communication, medicine and inventions have allowed communities to grow or change.

We celebrated the Martin Luther King holiday by learning more about his life and performing plays.  The children have found it hard to believe some of the injustice towards certain groups of people and paid special attention to Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech given in Washington D.C. in 1963.

In Science we have begun looking at patterns in the sky.  They are discovering what causes day, night, shadows, and seasons. The children have learned the different phases of the Moon.  They are new moon, crescent, half moon, gibbous and full moon.  The third graders have also learned that stars make patterns called constellations.

Now that they have learned all the facts from 0-10 in multiplication, the third graders are working on their “License to Multiply”.  In order to get their “License to Multiply” they will need to pass 23 timed tests.  Knowing their multiplication facts will help them as they start learning their division facts!
