St. Wenceslaus School History

St. Wenceslaus school has been an active part of the Wahoo community since 1910. When the school began it was staffed by the Benedictine Sisters for 13 years. The sisters lived in the school and students were allowed to board there. Grades one through ten attended the school at this time. The Notre Dame Sisters in 1923 agreed to teach at St. Wenceslaus and they have stayed on to this present date. The first lay teacher came in 1956 and the first Marian sisters came in 1967. The first lay principal was employed in 1973. St. Wenceslaus’s enrollment continues to grow. The enrollment had gone from 109 students in 1923 to the peak year, 1963, with 298 students. St. Wenceslaus was a K-12 system at this time.

St. Wenceslaus remained a K-12 school until the year 1964 when Neumann High School opened its doors to grades 9-12. St. Wenceslaus became a K-8 facility. St. Wenceslaus school remained a K-8 facility from 1964 to 1989. Grades one through five were self-contained with a student-teacher ratio of 16 to 1. Grades 6-8 were considered the Jr. High and they were departmentalized and had a student-teacher ratio of 15-1. The enrollment steadily increased throughout each year. This increase of student enrollment was the catalyst for a new school building to be built in 1989. This year the school housed K-6 and the 7th and 8th grade went down to Bishop Neumann. Further increase in enrollment saw an extra addition built on in 1995. In 1997 a preschool program began at St. Wenceslaus. A portable building was placed on the east part of the parking lot and contained two classrooms. Preschool was held on one side and music on the other. Enrollment in the 1999-2000 school year was 305 students K - 6 with a preschool enrollment of 32 students.

St. Wenceslaus has always had a strong academic program with the Catholic Faith being of utmost importance. The Religion Department at St. Wenceslaus has continued to be active throughout the years. Students plan and participate in weekly masses. All teachers strive to develop Christian, caring students who reach out to the greater community. Students visit the Care Center and Haven House regularly. Students are also involved in service projects throughout the year to bring about an awareness for the needs of others.

Physical education, music, band and computer have been and will remain an integral part of the St. Wenceslaus curriculum. We believe in enhancing every aspect of the students’ life. The band was formed in 1958-the same year the 11th grade was added. Two years later the 12th grade was added.

Jr. High sports were introduced at St. Wenceslaus in 1957. At that time, only boys’ football and basketball were offered. The years following both boys and girls were offered a variety of athletic programs.

St. Wenceslaus has in the past and always will be a vital part of the Wahoo community. St. Wenceslaus is progressive but retains the Christian values needed to build a better community. Students’ outcomes stress that all students will: Demonstrate Christian values, be self-directed life-long learners, grow in their knowledge and commitment to their faith, and be ready to face the challenges in their academic and spiritual life in upcoming years. We are proud to play an active role in strengthening our students and our community.
